  • Cleanup included

Three ways to remodel a kitchen

Prices are for a medium kitchen in California, including labor and materials.

Cosmetic Refresh

$12,500–$28,000
2–4 weeks
  • Cabinets painted or refaced, with new doors and hardware
  • New countertops (laminate, quartz or granite)
  • New backsplash, sink and faucet
  • Lighting and paint refreshed

Best for: Your layout works and the cabinet boxes are sound; the finishes just look dated.

Pull-and-Replace

$30,000–$68,000
5–10 weeks
  • Old kitchen removed down to the walls
  • New semi-custom cabinets and stone or quartz counters
  • New flooring, backsplash, sink and faucet
  • Lighting and outlets brought up to current code

Best for: The layout is fine but everything in it has had its day.

Custom Remodel

$61,000–$143,000
10–20 weeks
  • Design and drawings for a new layout
  • Custom cabinets built to the room
  • Utilities relocated as the plan requires
  • Permits and inspections managed start to finish

Best for: You want an open kitchen, an island or a layout built around you.

Choosing the right service

What does a kitchen remodel cost in San Diego?

Most medium kitchens land in one of three bands: $12,500–$28,000 for a refresh, $30,000–$68,000 for a full replacement in the same layout, and $61,000–$143,000 for a custom remodel. Cabinets and layout changes move the number most.

Which is better for a kitchen, quartz or granite?

They cost about the same installed. Pick quartz for low upkeep and a uniform look, granite for natural veining and better tolerance of heat.

Will I be able to cook during the remodel?

Not for most of it. Most families set up a small temporary kitchen with a microwave, coffee maker and fridge in another room.

What can make a kitchen remodel cost more than planned?

Hidden problems and changes of mind. In older homes, opening walls can turn up outdated wiring, galvanized pipes or ungrounded outlets that have to be brought up to code; a good quote names this risk up front. Keeping 10–15% of the budget in reserve covers most of it.

Is a kitchen remodel worth it for resale?

Smaller, mid-range kitchen remodels consistently rank among the projects that recoup the largest share of their cost at resale in the Cost vs Value report, while large upscale remodels recoup less. If you plan to sell soon, a refresh usually pays back best.
